Sarah’s Unspoken Smile

She listened to the stories as the children huddled closely around the crackling fire, on this moonless night.

Quietly, she sat back in the dark dim light under a tree. After the children and young adults became contented, comfortable, and the voices became whispers, she then retired  to her tent, where she too began to reminisce of a time that once was.

Her thoughts carried her into the distant past of her own childhood. Vivid pictures of her mother, then her mother’s mother whom was Rose Kauhane,  then her great-grandmother Papahi Sarah Kaaialii Kauhane, whom made an keepsake impression.

She envisioned a old small house. Here she found herself  looking beyond an open door. The absence of light seem odd.   In side was the flickering lite of candles, which was magical  yet mysterious.  To her left side, along a short hallway was a small shelf displaying a prayer place or altar, which nearly paralleled an entry room to her right, but steadfastly she kept walking forward through another open door.

Here, within this small room, her great-grandmother was blanketed with natural light upon her shoulders, it seemed as if she wore a halo upon her head, while standing in a long dress beneath the window. Sarah was beautiful to her eyes.

She recalled how closely she studied this mysterious woman. How her shallow grin turned slowly into a soft unspoken smile which expressed her love. She felt loved, yet she knew her Sarah was in sorrow.  She didn’t know it would be the last time she would see Sarah, yet she sensed the sadness.  Lulled by the voice of her mother behind her, she retired to the main room.
